Some only admit guilt once caught, and then insincerely apologize, planning to keep doing wrong. We see through that behavior, and God does too.

1 Samuel 15:24-26

24 Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord and your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice. 25 Now therefore, please pardon my sin and return with me that I may worship the Lord.” 26 And Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you. For you have rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you from being king over Israel.”

To speak no evil of your rulers, even when their behavior is unbecoming, requires tact, a useful lifelong skill to nurture, that also facilities appropriate responses when confronted with your own mistakes and shortcomings.

Act 23:5

5 And Paul said, “I did not know, brothers, that he was the high priest, for it is written, ‘You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.’”
